Every team is different. In order to really build up your Team Culture, do effective Recruitment, and now in which direction to optimize your Internal Processes, it's very important to know what type of team you're building.
# Why does your team exist?
Every team has a purpose. It's important that everyone in the team understands yours. Contextualize it in the Environment and how it helps the company achieve its goals. Understand how to measure success.
# Where does your team fit in?
Unless your team is really small, likelihood is that your team will have interactions with other teams. What is your relationship to them? How do you fit together?
# What aptitudes and attitudes are required in your team?
Understanding the purpose and the environment will help you understand what skills and attitudes are important. (See also: wardley on pioneers, settlers and town planners
). For example, a services team that is building the infrastructure everyone else uses to build on will have very different needs to a team optimizing conversion rates through experimentation.
# What type of team do YOU want?
With all of this in place, it's important to visualize what type of team **you** want to build. Imagine the team operating as ideally as it can. **Can you describe it in a single sentence?**
What do you bring to the table to make this vision a reality?
What do you need from others?
Once you have this vision, sell it to the existing teammates. Do they agree? Update Your Assumptions.
This one sentence might sound unnecessary, but it can be a rallying point, and a reminder of what you're trying to build even if everyone's too busy getting it built.
