The FUEL Model is a framework for conversations that is used for Coaching, but has applications for other conversations where the parties want to understand each other and arrive at a plan.
* **F**: Frame the Conversation. Keep a positive tone and agree on a desired outcome and agenda. * **U**: Understand the current state. Make sure you understand the other persons' position before presenting yours. * **E**: Explore the desired state. Brainstorm and get suggestions on what the ideal state looks like. * **L**: Lay out a plan. Decide on a path forward, make commitments and establish a feedback loop.
# Frame the Conversation
Being clear about the topic of conversation, agenda, and expected outcome can help keep the session on track, reduce detours, and set participants in the right mindset.
* What are you talking about? * What should have happened by the end of the session? * What will be the structure of the conversation?
# Understanding the current state
This is important to avoid Disagreeing on the Problem. Before offering your point of view, make sure you understand where the other person stands:
* What is the current state? * What contributed to it? * What's each persons' role in it? * What is the impact?
# Explore the desired state
Once you agree on the current state, you can start exploring visions of the future. Look for a variety of options and paths, consider potential blockers and how it affects others.
# Lay out a plan
Agree and commit to a plan. *What* will happen, and *When*. Identify who needs to be involved, and establish feedback loops to make sure you check things are progressing how you expected them to.
